Book #18 in the multiple New York Times best-selling Ring of Fire series, and the team behind national bestseller 1635 The Kremlin Games.
When Grantville, West Virginia was transported back to the year 1631 -- in the middle of the Thirty Years' War, no less -- many things happened. Many opportunities arose. It's said that a rising tide lifts all boats. Perhaps not quite as high as the Barbie Consortium rose, however.
A cabal of ten- to twelve-year-old girls?
They aren't twelve anymore. And they gave up playing with dolls some years ago, when they sold them all and started an investment consortium. A consortium that did quite well.
The Barbie Consortium hits Vienna. In several different ways. The princes and princesses, dukes and duchesses, the common men and women on the street have no idea what's about to happen.Neither do the girls, but they're determined it'll happen their way.

Warning: this is a book heavy in dialog and light on action. Some ROF books are heavy action, some are heavy dialog. This leans toward the latter. The newly-crowned Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire wants a car and he wants a track where he can race it. Enter the people from Grantville and a number of Up-Time (2000's period) mechanics and engineers with more than one Down-Time (17th century: 1635 AD) agenda. One group helps the Emperor with driving lessons in the new Auto-Ring racetrack and small city growing outside of Vienna, one group wants to build a railroad back to Magdeburg, and the third group—"The Barbies" want to save the Holy Roman Empire from financial collapse. It's complicated but followable and it settles down to being a couple of inter-twining stories that actually manage some action near the end.
Oh, and the Turks are on the move and Vienna is squarely in their sights. While it is hinted at, it is only hinted at and one suspects that there is another story brewing set in Vienna. Oh, and there are no waltzes...outside of the political ones. A good read and once you manage to place everyone, its entertaining.

1636 The Viennese Waltz Ring of Fire Series Book 16 eBook Eric Flint Paula Goodlett Gorg Huff Reviews
This is a great book, both as a stand alone story and as one of the 1635 year collection. The novels are each able to be read as a single book, however all the story line weave together a much bigger tapestry if you read them all because they are set in the same year, so events in one influence the others.
Great series, but uneven ,because of entries like this one. I kept reading, hoping that something interesting would happen, but nothing did before I finally gave up on it. I did learn a lot about the petty nobility of the Austrian Empire in the 17th Century (I assume that anything so detailed and dull is based on too much research), quite a bit more than I ever wanted, in fact.
Very entertaining. Plot not too fragmentary to follow without a spreadsheet. Cast of characters small enough to remember them all and their interrelationships - most of the time. Plot twist to wedding and who's wedding was not anticipated, a definite plus. I would read again! Just not right soon.
The book began slowly and stayed with that for sometime but with certainty the plot unfolded showing the reader that excitement was mounting for a surprised finish.
What thrilled me most was the development in Austria from the up-timer influences. The reader can well imagine that was how things would develop in the real world.
All in all, I throughly recommend THE VIENNESE WALTZ as a must read. Miss this book and you will miss that which is very worthwhile in the development of following books.
THIS BOOK IS A MOST READ!
Much better than some of the previous ones. It's a return to some of the core aspects that made the other books so good. The story moves along at a good pace and is not subject to boring sections about minor characters. Warning it does deal with a lot of fiscal and monetary issues so some might find that boring but, while I'm not an economist by any stretch, I found the discussion very interesting, especially in light of the current global monetary issues we see today. Eric takes a complex topic and breaks it down in a real(istic) world way that is understandable without having to read a bunch of research to follow what is happening.
It's the 1630's and the new Emperor of Austria-Hungary has bought a car, a 240Z, which comes with two mechanics, their families, and a teenage girl. What the Emperor doesn't know is that the girl is one of the Barbies, a group of investors, movers and shakers, mostly from the future, and it doesn't take her long to decide that the time for Vienna to change has come.
The Barbies don't need guns. They use economics, currency, wealth management, fair labor practices, and, most important of all, image management.
I have read this new release from the Ring of Fire series three times (once aloud to my wife), and it continues to delight. We see the Barbies from the point of view of the down-time Austrians, including the His Serene Highness, the Ken Doll. We see the Austrians from the Barbies' point of view. Very nice people, but mistaken in thinking that change comes in the form of an Ottoman invasion, not half a dozen teenagers from the future.
This is not a good place to start. More of a "filler"
Part of the problem is the economic aspects seem to be repeated as nauseum. And I'll admit that while it's important, it's not my favorite theme. And it certainly did not need to be brought up SO MANY TIMES.
Other problems includes a cast of several dozen. The Barbie Consortium alone is at least 8 characters, with family members and employees bringing the number over 20. Now add political figures from around Europe, not to mention powerful people in Vienna. There just isn't enough space in the book to do them all justice, so most of them get very few lines...which still chew up time and plot and pages introducing them. Very confusing.
If you are a fan of the series, read the book. But if you aren't a fan of the series, stay away.
